ns who speculate the most boldly oftenconform with the most perfect quietude to the external regulationsof society。 The thought suffices them察without investing itself in theflesh and blood of action。 So it seemed to be with Hester。 Yet察hadlittle Pearl never e to her from the spiritual world察it might havebeen far otherwise。 Then察she might have e down to us in historyhand in hand with Ann Hutchinson察as the foundress of a religioussect。 She might察in one of her phases察have been a prophetess。 Shemight察and not improbably would察have suffered death from the sterntribunals of the period察for attempting to undermine the foundationsof the Puritan establishment。 But察in the education of her childthe mother's enthusiasm of thought had something to wreak itself upon。Providence察in the person of this little girl察had assigned toHester's charge the germ and blossom of womanhood察to be cherished anddeveloped amid a host of difficulties。 Everything was against her。 Theworld was hostile。 The child's own nature had something wrong in itwhich continually betokened that she had been born amiss´ theeffluence of her mother's lawless passion´ and often impelled Hesterto ask察in bitterness of heart察whether it were for ill or good thatthe poor little creature had been born at all。 Indeed察the same dark question often rose into her mind察withreference to the whole race of womanhood。 Was existence worthaccepting察even to the happiest among them拭As concerned her ownindividual existence察she had long ago decided in the negative察anddismissed the point as settled。 A tendency to speculation察though itmay keep an察yet makes her sad。 She discernsit may be察such a hopeless task before her。 As a first step察the wholesystem of society is to be torn down察and built up anew。 Then察thevery nature of the opposite sex察or its long hereditary habit察whichhas bee like nature察is to be essentially modified察before womancan be allowed to assume what seems a fair and suitable position。Finally察all other difficulties being obviated察woman cannot takeadvantage of these preliminary reforms察until she herself shall haveundergone a still mightier change察in which察perhaps察the etherealessence察wherein she has her truest life察will be found to haveevaporated。 A woman never overes these problems by any exerciseof thought。 They are not to be solved察or only in one way。 If herheart chance to e uppermost察they vanish。 Thus察Hester Prynnewhose heart had lost its regular and healthy throb察wandered without aclew in the dark labyrinth of mind察now turned aside by aninsurmountable precipice察now starting back from a deep chasm。 Therewas wild and ghastly scenery all around her察and a home and fortnowhere。 At times察a fearful doubt strove to possess her soul察whetherit were not better to send Pearl at once to heaven察and go herselfto such futurity as Eternal Justice should provide。 The scarlet letter had not done its office。 Now察however察her interview with the Reverend Mr。 Dimmesdale察on thenight of his vigil察had given her a new theme of reflection察andheld up to her an object that appeared worthy of any exertion andsacrifice for its attainment。 She had witnessed the intense miserybeneath which the minister struggled察or察to speak more accuratelyhad ceased to struggle。 She saw that he stood on the verge oflunacy察if he had not already stepped across it。 It was impossibleto doubt察that察whatever painful efficacy there might be in the secretsting of remorse察a deadlier venom had been infused into it by thehand that proffered relief。 A secret enemy had been continually by hisside察under the semblance of a friend and helper察and had availedhimself of the opportunities thus afforded for tampering with thedelicate springs of Mr。 Dimmesdale's nature。 Hester could not butask herself察whether there had not originally been a defect oftruth察courage察and loyalty察on her own part察in allowing the ministerto be thrown into a position where so much evil was to be forebodedand nothing auspicious to be hoped。 Her only justification lay inthe fact察that she had been able to discern no method of rescuinghim from a blacker ruin than had overwhelmed herself察except byacquiescing in Roger Chillingworth's scheme of disguise。 Under thatimpulse察she had made her choice察and had chosen察as it nowappeared察the more wretched alternative of the two。 She determinedto redeem her error察so far as it might yet be possible。Strengthened by years of hard and solemn trial察she felt herself nolonger so inadequate to cope with Roger Chillingworth as on thatnight察abased by sin察and half maddened by the ignominy that was stillnew察when they had talked together in the prison´chamber。 She hadclimbed her way察since then察to a higher point。 The old man察on theother hand察had brought himself nearer to her level察or perhapsbelow it察by the revenge which he had stooped for。 In fine察Hester Prynne resolved to meet her former husband察and dowhat might be in her power for the rescue of the victim on whom he hadso evidently set his gripe。 The occasion was not long to seek。 Oneafternoon察walking with Pearl in a retired part of the peninsulashe beheld the old physician察with a basket on one arm察and a staff inthe other hand察stooping along the ground察in quest of roots and herbsto concoct his medicines withal。 XIV。 HESTER AND THE PHYSICIAN。 HESTER bade little Pearl run down to the margin of the water察andplay with the shells and tangled seaweed察until she should have talkedawhile with yonder gatherer of herbs。 So the child flew away like abird察and察making bare her small white feet察went pattering alongthe moist margin of the sea。 Here and there she came to a full stopand peeped curiously into a pool察left by the retiring tide as amirror for Pearl to see her face in。 Forth peeped at her察out of thepool察with dark察glistening curls around her head察and an elf´smile inher eyes察the image of a little maid察whom Pearl察having no otherplaymate察invited to take her hand察and run a race with her。 But thevisionary little maid察on her part察beckoned likewise察as if to say察This is a better place e thou into the pool ─And Pearl察steppingin察mid´leg deep察beheld her own white feet at the bottom察whileout of a still lower depth察came the gleam of a kind of fragmentarysmile察floating to and fro in the agitated water。 Meanwhile察her mother had accosted the physician。 ;I would speak a word with you察─said she´ ;a word that concernsus much。; ;Aha and is it Mistress Hester that has a word for old RogerChillingworth拭─answered he察raising himself from his stoopingposture。 ;With all my heart Why察mistress察I hear good tidings ofyou察on all hands No longer ago than yester´eve察a magistrate察a wiseand godly man察was discoursing of your affairs察Mistress Hester察andwhispered me that there had been question concerning you in thecouncil。 It was debated whether or no察with safety to the mon wealyonder scarlet letter might be taken off your bosom。 On my lifeHester察I made my entreaty to the worshipful magistrate that itmight be done forthwith ─ It lies not in the pleasure of the magistrates to take off thisbadge。; calmly replied Hester。 ;Were I worthy to be quit of it察itwould fall away of its own nature察or be transformed into somethingthat should speak a different purport。; ;Nay察then察wear it察if it suit you better察─rejoined he。 ;A womanmust needs follow her own fancy touching the adornment of herperson。 The letter is gaily embroidered察and shows right bravely onyour bosom ─ All this while察Hester had been looking steadily at the old man察andwas shocked察as well as wonder´smitten察to discern what a change hadbeen wrought upon him within the past seven years。 It was not somuch that he had grown older察for though the traces of advancinglife were visible察he bore his age well察and seemed to retain a wiryvigour and alertness。 But the former aspect of an intellectual andstudious man察calm and quiet察which was what she best remembered inhim察had altogether vanished察and been succeeded by an eagersearching察almost fierce察yet carefully guarded look。 It seemed tobe his wish and purpose to mask this expression with a smile察butthe latter played him false察and flickered over his visage soderisively察that the spectator could see his blackness all thebetter for it。 Ever and anon察too察there came a glare of red light outof his eyes察as if the old man's soul were on fire察and kept onsmouldering duskily within his breast察until察by some casual puff ofpassion察it was blown into a momentary flame。 This he repressed察asspeedily as possible察and strove to look as if nothing of the kind hadhappened。 In a word察old Roger Chillingworth was a striking evidence ofman's faculty of transforming himself into a devil察if he will onlyfor a reasonable space of time察undertake a devil's office。 Thisunhappy person had effected such a transformation察by devotinghimself察for seven years察to the constant analysis of a heart fullof torture察and deriving his enjoyment thence察and adding fuel tothose fiery tortures which he analysed and gloated over。 The scarlet letter burned on Hester Prynne's bosom。 Here was anotherruin察the responsibility of which came partly home to her。 ;What see you in my face察─asked the physician察 that you look at itso earnestly拭─ Something that would make me weep察if there were any tears bitterenough for it察─answered she。 ;But let it pass It is of yondermiserable man that I would speak。; ;And what of him拭─cried Roger Chillingworth eagerly察as if he lovedthe topic察and were glad of an opportunity to discuss it with the onlyperson of whom he could make a confidant。 ;Not to hide the truthMistress Hester察my thoughts happen just now to be busy with thegentleman。 So speak freely察and I will make answer。; ;When we last spake together察─said Hester察 now seven years ago察itwas your pleasure to extort a promise of secrecy察as touching theformer relation betwixt yourself and me。 As the life and good fameof yonder man were in your hands察there seemed no choice to me察saveto be silent察in accordance with your behest。 Yet it was not withoutheavy misgivings that I thus bound myself察for察having cast off allduty towards other human beings察there remained a duty towards himand something whispered me tha
