taken the shape of a littlemaid察and were gifted with a soul of the sea´fire察that flashesbeneath the prow in the night´time。 One of these seafaring men´ the shipmaster察indeed察who had spokento Hester Prynne´ was so smitten with Pearl's aspect察that heattempted to lay hands upon her察with purpose to snatch a kiss。Finding it as impossible to touch her as to catch a humming´bird inthe air察he took from his hat the gold chain that was twisted aboutit察and threw it to the child。 Pearl immediately twined it aroundher neck and waist察with such happy skill察that察once seen there察itbecame a part of her察and it was difficult to imagine her without it。 ;Thy mother is yonder woman with the scarlet letter察─said theseaman。 ;Wilt thou carry her a message from me拭─ If the message pleases me察I will察─answered Pearl。 ;Then tell her察─rejoined he察 that I spake again with theblack´a´visaged察hump´shouldered old doctor察and he engages to bringhis friend察the gentleman she wots of察aboard with him。 So let thymother take no thought察save for herself and thee。 Wilt thou tellher this察thou witch´baby拭─ Mistress Hibbins says my father is the Prince of the Air ─criedPearl察with a naughty smile。 ;If thou callest me that ill name察Ishall tell him of thee察and he will chase thy ship with a tempest ─ Pursuing a zigzag course across the market´place察the child returnedto her mother察and municated what the mariner had said。 Hester'sstrong察calm察steadfastly enduring spirit almost sank察at last察onbeholding this dark and grim countenance of an inevitable doom察which´at the moment when a passage seemed to open for the minister andherself out of their labyrinth of misery´ showed itself察with anunrelenting smile察right in the midst of their path。 With her mind harassed by the terrible perplexity in which theshipmaster's intelligence involved her察she was also subjected toanother trial。 There were many people present察from the countryround about察who had often heard scarlet letter察and to whom it hadbeen made terrific by a hundred false or exaggerated rumours察butwho had never beheld it with their own bodily eyes。 These察afterexhausting other modes of amusement察now thronged about HesterPrynne with rude and boorish intrusiveness。 Unscrupulous as it washowever察it could not bring them nearer than a circuit of severalyards。 At that distance they accordingly stood察fixed there by thecentrifugal force of the repugnance which the mystic symbolinspired。 The whole gang of sailors察likewise察observing the pressof spectators察and learning the purport of the scarlet letter察cameand thrust their sunburnt and desperado´looking faces into the ring。Even the Indians were affected by a sort of cold shadow of the whiteman's curiosity察and察gliding through the crowd察fastened theirsnake´like black eyes on Hester's bosom察conceiving察perhaps察that thewearer of this brilliantly embroidered badge must needs be a personageof high dignity among her people。 Lastly the inhabitants of the towntheir own interest in this worn´out subject languidly revivingitself察by sympathy with what they saw others feel lounged idly tothe same quarter察and tormented Hester Prynne察perhaps more than allthe rest察with their cool察well´acquainted gaze at her familiar shame。Hester saw and recognised the self´same faces of that group ofmatrons察who had awaited her forthing from the prison´door察sevenyears ago察all save one察the youngest and only passionate amongthem察whose burial´robe she had since made。 At the final hour察whenshe was so soon to fling aside the burning letter察it had strangelybee the centre of more remark and excitement察and was thus madeto sear her breast more painfully察than at any time since the firstday she put it on。 While Hester stood in that magic circle of ignominy察where thecunning cruelty of her sentence seemed to have fixed her for ever察theadmirable preacher was looking down from the sacred pulpit upon anaudience察whose very inmost spirits had yielded to his control。 Thesainted minister in the church The woman of the scarlet letter in themarket´place What imagination would have been irreverent enough tosurmise that the same scorching stigma was on them both XXIII。 THE REVELATION OF THE SCARLET LETTER。 THE eloquent voice察on which the souls of the listening audience hadbeen borne aloft as on the swelling waves of the sea察at length cameto a pause。 There was a momentary silence察profound as what shouldfollow the utterance of oracles。 Then ensued a murmur andhalf´hushed tumult察as if the auditors察released from the high spellthat had transported them into the region of another's mind察werereturning into themselves察with all their awe and wonder still heavyon them。 In a moment more察the crowd began to gush forth from thedoors of the church。 Now that there was an end察they needed otherbreath察more fit to support the gross and earthly life into which theyrelapsed察than that atmosphere which the preacher had converted intowords of flame察and had burdened with the rich fragrance of histhought。 In the open air their rapture broke into speech。 The street andthe market´place absolutely babbled察from side to side察with applausesof the minister。 His hearers could not rest until they had told oneanother of what each knew better than he could tell or hear。 Accordingto their united testimony察never had man spoken in so wise察so highand so holy a spirit察as he that spake this day察nor had inspirationever breathed through mortal lips more evidently than it did throughhis。 Its influence could be seen察as it were察descending upon him察andpossessing him察and continually lifting him out of the writtendiscourse that lay before him察and filling him with ideas that musthave been as marvellous to himself as to his audience。 His subject察itappeared察had been the relation between the Deity and themunities of mankind察with a special reference to the New Englandwhich they were here planting in the wilderness。 And察as he drewtowards the close察a spirit as of prophecy had e upon himconstraining him to its purpose as mightily as the old prophets ofIsrael were constrained察only with this difference察that察whereasthe Jewish seers had denounced judgments and ruin on their country察itwas his mission to foretell a high and glorious destiny for thenewly gathered people of the Lord。 But察throughout it all察and throughthe whole discourse察there had been a certain deep察sad undertone ofpathos察which could not be interpreted otherwise than as the naturalregret of one soon to pass away。 Yes察their minister whom they soloved´ and who so loved them all察that he could not departheavenward without a sigh´ had the foreboding of untimely death uponhim察and would soon leave them in their tears This idea of histransitory stay on earth gave the last emphasis to the effect whichthe preacher had produced察it was as if an angel察in his passage tothe skies察had shaken his bright wings over the people for an instant´at once a shadow and a splendour´ and had shed down a shower of goldentruths upon them。 Thus察there had e to the Reverend Mr。 Dimmesdale´ as to most menin their various spheres察though seldom recognised until they see itfar behind them´ an epoch of life more brilliant and full of triumphthan any previous one察or that any which could hereafter be。 He stoodat this moment察on the very proudest eminence of superiority察to whichthe gifts of intellect察rich lore察prevailing eloquence察and areputation of whitest sanctity察could exalt a clergyman in NewEngland's earliest days察when the professional character was of itselfa lofty pedestal。 Such was the position which the minister occupiedas he bowed his head forward on the cushions of the pulpit察at theclose of his Election Sermon。 Meanwhile Hester Prynne was standingbeside the scaffold of the pillory察with the scarlet letter stillburning on her breast Now was heard again the clangour of the music察and the measuredtramp of the military escort察issuing from the church´door。 Theprocession was to be marshalled thence to the town´hall察plete the ceremonies of the day。 Once more察therefore察the train of venerable and majestic fatherswas seen moving through a broad pathway of the people察who drew backreverently察on either side察as the Governor and magistrates察the oldand wise men察the holy ministers察and all that were eminent andrenowned察advanced into the midst of them。 When they were fairly inthe market´place察their presence was greeted by a shout。 This´though doubtless it might acquire additional force and volume from thechild´ like loyalty which the age awarded to its rulers´ was felt tobe an irrepressible outburst of enthusiasm kindled in the auditorsby that high strain of eloquence which was yet reverberating intheir ears。 Each felt the impulse in himself察and察in the same breathcaught it from his neighbour。 Within the church察it had hardly beenkept down察beneath the sky察it pealed upward to the zenith。 There werehuman beings enough察and enough of highly wrought and symphoniousfeeling察to produce that more impressive sound than the organ tones ofthe blast察or the thunder察or the roar of the sea察even that mightyswell of many voices察blended into one great voice by the universalimpulse which makes likewise one vast heart out of the many。 Neverfrom the soil of New England察had gone up such a shout Never察onNew England soil察had stood the man so honoured by his mortal brethrenas the preacher How fared it with him then拭Were there not the brilliant particlesof a halo in the air about his head So etherealised by spirit as hewas察and so apotheosised by worshipping admirers察did his footstepsin the procession察really tread upon the dust of earth拭 As the ranks of military men and civil fathers moved onward察alleyes were turned towards the point where the minister was seen toapproach among them。 The shout died into a murmur察as one portion ofthe crowd after another obtained a glimpse of him。 How feeble and palehe looked察amid all his triumph The energy´ or say察rather察theinspiration which had held him up察until he should have deliveredthe sacred message that brought its own strength along with it fromheaven´ was withdrawn察now that it had so faithfully performed itsoffice。 The glow察which they had just before beheld burning on
